[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] 'Park Geun-hye's confidant' lawyer Yoo Young-ha is running for the Daegu Suseong by-election for the National Assembly.
On the 1st at 2 p.m., Yoo held a press conference at the People Power Party Daegu City Party auditorium in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, declaring, "I have decided to run in the Daegu Suseong National Assembly by-election held together with the June 1 local elections."
Yoo explained the reason for running, saying, "I deeply considered whether it was appropriate to run in the by-election immediately after losing the Daegu mayoral primary, but I could not just stand by to protect the identity of the Republic of Korea against the parliamentary dictatorship of the Democratic Party, which has taken control of the National Assembly."
He added, "I felt the heavy voice that conservative forces must unite to support the new government. I gathered courage in response to the request to play the role of a bridge."
Yoo emphasized that this by-election campaign will "start alone" without the support of former President Park Geun-hye. Previously, Park had served as the chairman of Yoo's support committee when he ran in the People Power Party Daegu mayoral primary, providing full support.
Regarding the possibility of a strategic nomination rather than a primary by the People Power Party, Yoo said, "I have never once disobeyed the party's decision. Whether it is a primary or a strategic nomination, I will follow the party's decision."
Meanwhile, Yoo placed third in the People Power Party Daegu mayoral primary. Representative Hong Joon-pyo received nearly half of the total votes with 49.49%, former Supreme Council member Kim Jae-won received 26.43%, and Yoo received 18.62%.
