Seoul City Promotes BIPV Solar Panels Enhancing Urban Aesthetics... Up to 80% Installation Cost Support

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 29th that it is accepting subsidy applications for the installation of “Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV),” which can reduce electricity bills and improve building aesthetics by installing solar power facilities similar to exterior materials on building facades, until June 10.

Since 2020, Seoul City has been the first local government nationwide to promote a private sector distribution project for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). This initiative aims to create a new technology solar market ecosystem by moving beyond the conventional solar power systems fixed on rooftops, balconies, or verandas. This year, a total of 1.5 billion KRW in subsidies will be provided.

Selected applicants can receive up to 80% support for installation costs. This year, subsidies will be provided for both design-type and new technology-type solar cells, with differential payments based on established criteria.

The application period this year is until June 10, and eligible applicants are private building owners or prospective owners located in Seoul. Applicants must prepare proposals together with qualified participating companies and submit them in person to the Green Energy Division at Seoul City Hall. Participating companies must hold a comprehensive construction license in Seoul and an electrical construction business license, or hold a specialized construction license related to the installation location and type along with an electrical construction business license. Solar cell module manufacturing facilities can also participate jointly with companies that meet the construction requirements.

The city will carefully verify company eligibility and installation plan appropriateness when selecting subsidy recipients. Quantitative evaluations include registration status of comprehensive and specialized construction licenses, possession of electrical construction business licenses, corporate credit ratings, distribution performance, and workforce availability. Qualitative evaluations will be conducted through related review committees assessing business capability and proposals.

Im Mi-kyung, head of the Green Energy Division of Seoul City, stated, “Seoul will continue to promote BIPV distribution, which can simultaneously achieve ‘eco-friendly energy distribution’ and ‘urban aesthetic improvement.’ We will strive to contribute to the environmentally friendly transition of Seoul’s energy structure and the reduction of greenhouse gases through this initiative.”
