Secured 3 Billion Won for Commercial Area Development Project around Seonyudo Station, Yangpyeong-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu Location Map of the 'Seonyuro Un Sangkwon' Development Project

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu announced that it has been selected for the “2022 Local Brand Commercial District Development Project Contest” hosted by Seoul City and will receive administrative and financial support for three years from this year to 2024 to revitalize the “Yangpyeong-dong Seonyuro-un Commercial District.”

This project aims to develop unique and attractive alley commercial districts into local brand commercial districts and supports everything from foundation establishment to revitalization. The district proposed the “Seonyuro-un Commercial District,” which connects the commercial areas around Seonyudo Station in Yangpyeong-dong, was finally selected in the contest, and secured a project budget of 3 billion KRW.

The “Seonyuro-un Commercial District” includes the Seonyudo Station Alley Shopping District, which was selected as Yeongdeungpo-gu’s first alley-type shopping district last year, the Seonyuro 55-gil alley commercial district, and the Seonyu Walking Street on Yangpyeong-ro 22ra-gil.

It boasts abundant waterfront spaces adjacent to the Han River and Anyangcheon Stream, convenient transportation, various cultural and sports infrastructures such as the Creative Arts Center and street parks, and is evaluated as a place with high potential for commercial district development due to its relatively high consumption tendency and desire for cultural enjoyment in a young and vibrant atmosphere.

In this contest, the district presented five local contents reflecting the regional characteristics of the target area.

First, inspired by the name “Seonyu (仙遊) Island,” known as a place where ancestors enjoyed leisurely activities, the plan is to create a “Seonyuro-un” lifestyle commercial district enjoyed daily by the Millennium and MZ generations together.

Second, a strategy to revitalize alley commercial districts utilizing Seonyudo Park, a landmark waterfront area in the southwestern region, and the green belt of “Anyangcheon Waterfront Park - Seonyudo Station - Yanghwa Hangang Park,” where culture and ecology coexist. The plan is to introduce alley commercial districts where visitors can enjoy food, entertainment, and sights while experiencing natural environments rarely accessible in the city.

Third, the “Sweet Village,” which includes the former Haitai Confectionery factory site and the current Lotte Confectionery factory. Centered on the Seonyu Walking Street connecting the Sweet Factory, a confectionery museum, to Seonyudo Park, the district plans to foster various local cultural platforms such as workshop experiences and cooking classes with the theme of “confectionery” in collaboration with local artists.

Fourth, a commercial district where people can comfortably stay with their pets. Taking advantage of the surrounding natural environment ideal for walking, pet-friendly cafes, and dedicated officetels, the district aims to develop content that leverages comprehensive pet infrastructure.

Fifth, a commercial district good for walking and discovering tastes in every alley. Through about 50 independent brands and local creator stores, the district plans to enhance the brand value of the commercial district, strengthen the competitiveness unique to the “Seonyuro-un Commercial District,” and offer visitors diverse enjoyment.

The district plans to provide focused support so that the potential of local contents can shine and create synergy among them.

Additionally, to ensure successful project implementation, the district will establish close cooperative relationships with local small business owners, Seoul City, and the Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation to jointly create the “Seonyuro-un Commercial District where Freshness (Fresh) and Immortality (仙) play.”

Before the full-scale development of the local brand commercial district, starting from the end of June this year, the district will hold visiting resident meetings in cooperation with the Credit Guarantee Foundation. It will also form a win-win council involving merchants, representative residents, and representative landlords.

A district official said, “The local brand commercial district development project will be a good opportunity for alley commercial districts struggling due to COVID-19 and changes in consumption patterns to overcome the crisis and regain vitality,” adding, “We will continue to prepare practical measures to support small business owners and do our best to revitalize the local economy.”
