[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 28th that it will conduct a special crackdown on drunk driving for one month starting from the 29th. The police explained that this crackdown is planned to prevent drunk driving traffic accidents as social distancing measures are gradually lifted, leading to an expected increase in drinking gatherings.
The police plan to mobilize as many available officers as possible, including traffic police, motorcycle patrol units, traffic task forces, and local police, for this crackdown. Simultaneous intensive inspections will be conducted during nighttime and late-night hours (10 PM to 6 AM) in entertainment districts, market areas, and residential connecting roads where drunk driving traffic accidents frequently occur.
In addition to the simultaneous crackdown, the 31 police stations within Seoul will conduct frequent drunk driving checks during morning rush hours for hangover driving, as well as during daytime at hiking trails and Hangang Park. Furthermore, the crackdown will also apply without exception to motorcycle delivery riders, bicycle, and electric kickboard drivers, whose numbers have recently increased significantly. A Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency official urged drivers to recognize the dangers of drunk driving themselves and to participate in safe driving.
