'Korean Islam, Campsite Established in Yeoncheon'... Yeoncheon County Council, "Opposition to Islam Influx in Yeoncheon" Five Yeoncheon County Council Members Pass Resolution Opposing the Influx of Islam into Yeoncheon [Yeoncheon County Council]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The Yeoncheon County Council in Gyeonggi Province has opposed the construction of an Islamic religious facility within the Yeoncheon area.

The Yeoncheon County Council announced on the 27th that "five Yeoncheon County council members?Choi Soong-tae, Lee Young-ae, Shim Sang-geum, Kim Mi-kyung, and Seo Hee-jung?expressed their opposition to the influx of Islam into Yeoncheon County in the main assembly hall after the conclusion of the 269th extraordinary session on the 26th."

These council members expressed concerns, stating, "Local residents, including the Yeoncheon County Christian Association, worry that if an Islamic campground is established, a large number of Islamic believers will enter, negatively affecting the social order and economy of the community."

In particular, they reiterated their opposition, saying, "If Islamic-related auxiliary facilities and commercial areas are strengthened, there is a high risk that local small business owners will suffer damages, and it may harm the local identity and traditional customs."

According to the county council, the Korea Islamic Foundation received development permission last March for a 23,363㎡ camping site in the Sinseo-myeon area of Yeoncheon County.

Meanwhile, in Daegu, last September, permission was granted to build an Islamic mosque, which has led to conflicts and lawsuits between the building owner and local residents.
