[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Five locations, including Pohang National Industrial Complex in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daebul National Industrial Complex in Jeollanam-do, will be developed as regional economic innovation hubs.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 26th that they held a committee meeting to strengthen the competitiveness of aging industrial complexes and preliminarily selected five sites as 'industrial transformation' regions: Pohang Industrial Complex, Daebul Industrial Complex, Daejeon Industrial Complex, Cheonan 3rd General Industrial Complex in Chungnam, and Cheongju Industrial Complex in Chungbuk. All were designated as 'Smart Green Industrial Complexes.'

The industrial complex transformation project aims to develop aging industrial complexes into hubs for regional industrial innovation and job creation in response to rapidly changing industrial environments such as digital transformation and carbon neutrality. When metropolitan local governments establish industrial complex innovation plans, the government evaluates them and designates five sites, concentrating budgets for three years.

On this day, Gyeongbuk, preliminarily selected as a transformation region, presented a vision to build a clean metal materials industry hub based on green steel by linking Pohang Industrial Complex as a hub with Gyeongju U-dong General Industrial Complex, Yeongcheon Advanced Parts and Materials Industrial Complex, and Pohang Steel Industrial Complex. Daejeon plans to establish a new growth base for K-manufacturing leading job creation by linking Daejeon Industrial Complex as a hub with Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone, Chungnam National University, and Hannam University. Jeonnam proposed a plan to leap forward as a hub for eco-friendly small and medium-sized ships and offshore wind power equipment production by linking Daebul Industrial Complex as a hub with Yeongam Samho General Industrial Complex, Haenam Hwawon General Industrial Complex, and Mokpo Sapjin General Industrial Complex.

In Chungnam, the plan is to build a future car materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) green cluster by linking Cheonan 3rd Industrial Complex as a hub with Asan Inju General Industrial Complex, Asan Technovalley General Industrial Complex, and Cheonan-Asan Small and Medium Research and Development Special Zone. Chungbuk presented a blueprint to develop the SoBuJang industry into a global technology hub through intelligent convergence technology by linking Cheongju Industrial Complex as a hub with Cheongju Osong Life Science Complex, Ochang Science Industrial Complex, and Oksan Industrial Complex.

Twelve central government ministries, including the Ministry of Land and the Ministry of Industry, will strengthen cooperation to ensure the innovation plans of the five regions proceed smoothly and increase the feasibility of the plans through securing regional budgets. A government official said, "We will spare no support for the selected regions so that aging industrial complexes can be reborn as innovative spaces leading the local economy and industry, and vibrant spaces where youth and talented individuals gather."
