Students 'Dissatisfied' with Outdated Academic Management System... 'Edutech' Needed in Universities

[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Amid growing global interest in EduTech, an innovative educational approach centered on the latest digital infrastructure driven by the 4th Industrial Revolution and the advent of the contactless era, student satisfaction with academic management systems within universities was found to be only 47.2%.

Students 'Dissatisfied' with Outdated Academic Management System... 'Edutech' Needed in Universities

AI company Saltlux (CEO Lee Kyung-il) announced on the 22nd that it conducted a three-week survey through its SNS, gathering responses from 847 participants, resulting in these findings.

According to the survey, students' frequency of accessing the on-campus academic management system was as follows: ▲ 2-3 times a week (52.0%) ▲ daily (22.5%) ▲ 1-2 times a month (21.2%) ▲ rarely (4.3%). When asked about satisfaction with the system, responses were ▲ dissatisfied (8.2%) ▲ acceptable but needs improvement (44.6%) ▲ generally satisfied (35.8%) ▲ satisfied (11.4%), showing a difference compared to access frequency.

A Saltlux representative analyzed, “While 74% of students access the system more than 2-3 times a week, satisfaction levels are relatively low. Since students have no choice but to rely on the unique on-campus system for academic management, it appears that those experiencing inconvenience are demanding improvements.”

Notably, the top area identified for improvement was ▲ lack of smooth communication channels with academic advisors (25.2%). A recent survey released on Seoul National University’s YouTube channel also ranked difficulties in communication between professors and students as a major challenge in contactless classes.

Other issues included ▲ outdated UI/UX (22.4%) ▲ complexity in checking grades and graduation requirements (21.5%) ▲ difficulty in accessing diverse and complex information (20.0%) ▲ inconsistent systems not personalized to individuals (10.9%).

The Saltlux representative added, “As the implementation of a ‘hyper-personalized learning environment’ optimized for individual students gains attention as a talent development strategy suitable for a technology-driven future society, cases aiming to digitally transform (DT) academic management systems to realize this are increasing. This not only greatly enhances student convenience and administrative staff efficiency but also serves as an important opportunity to redefine the value of university education.”

Meanwhile, ‘SnuGini,’ introduced by Saltlux to Seoul National University last year, is Korea’s first intelligent academic management system.

It standardized over 300 million academic information data points and introduced semantic search capable of understanding words and context, enabling easy access to course syllabi, lecture offerings, and even professor information such as research history. Additionally, it established a foundation for students to proactively manage their studies tailored to their characteristics through course recommendation services reflecting major-specific graduation requirements and interest hashtags, as well as an intuitive UI/UX.

Through the ongoing second phase project this year, the system will be further advanced by building a one-stop student-designed major service and newly introducing a direct consultation service between professors and students. This is expected to establish a process where professors can actively assist students’ university life, contributing not only to the realization of a hyper-personalized learning environment but also to addressing blind spots in contactless education.
