Decision After Much Deliberation on Party Candidacy Request
Five Promises Including Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Bill
[Asia Economy Reporter Junyi Park] Lee Kwang-jae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, officially announced his candidacy for Governor of Gangwon Province, saying, "I have received great grace from the people of Gangwon Province."
On the 21st, Lee held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and said, "I want to make Gangwon Province the most beloved land of challenge and innovation in Korea, the 'Switzerland with a sea.' I want to make it like the Netherlands or Singapore."
He added, "The Democratic Party is requesting me to run," and said, "I want to become a governor who changes the destiny of Gangwon Province."
He proposed five measures to the party, promising to open a 'Golden Age of Gangwon Province.'
First, he stated that the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Act must be passed. Lee said, "It was a pledge of both ruling and opposition parties in the last three presidential elections," and added, "Now is the time to keep the promise."
He also said, "Gangwon Province and the metropolitan area must be connected by rail," demanding the connection of GTX-A from Suseo to Gwangju to Wonju and the extension of GTX-B to Chuncheon. He also insisted on establishing the Yongmun-Hongcheon railway.
Furthermore, he said that disaster prevention projects such as forest fires and floods should be promoted on the east coast of Gangwon Province and Gyeongsangbuk Province.
Lee said that soldiers stationed in the border areas of Gangwon Province should be supported to have opportunities for self-development such as basic digital education, foreign languages, and driver's licenses. He also expressed that houses below a certain size in depopulated areas within Gangwon Province should be excluded from the two-household rule per one family.
