[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Hyundai Heavy Industries Group 1% Sharing Foundation has launched a support program for the independence of people with disabilities by accepting applications for disability support programs.

The foundation recently announced on the 21st that it distributed sponsorship funds totaling 360 million won to 25 disability welfare facilities nationwide, including Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, through a public contest for disability program support. The purpose of the project is to discover excellent and innovative programs that provide practical help to people with disabilities and to enhance the effectiveness of support.

In February, the foundation publicly recruited disability support programs targeting disability welfare facilities nationwide and selected 25 facilities with high program necessity and completeness. Each facility receives up to 20 million won in sponsorship funds. The facilities operate programs such as life improvement, independence education, and healing.

Lee Changhee, director of Chung Hyun Welfare Center, selected through the contest, said, "Due to COVID-19, sports activities for people with disabilities have been restricted, causing many difficulties in health management." He added, "Thanks to the foundation's support, we were able to operate a sports program for people with developmental disabilities, which greatly eased our concerns." A foundation official responded, "The project was designed to provide the help each facility needs," and added, "We will continue to expand the project to ensure practical benefits reach people with disabilities."

The foundation was established by employees who agreed to donate 1% of their salaries. It supports disability welfare facilities nationwide every year. Since 2019, it has been producing 'barrier-free' films with the Korean Film Directors' Guild, which include subtitles and audio descriptions for the hearing and visually impaired.
