Seoul City Joins Hands with Baedal Minjok and 3 Other Delivery Apps to Phase Out Single-Use Delivery Containers

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 21st, Seoul City announced that on the 22nd, it will sign a "Business Agreement to Promote the Use of Reusable Delivery Containers" with four delivery app companies: Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, Coupang Eats, and Ttaenggyeoyo.

The signing ceremony, held on Earth Day, which was established to raise awareness of the seriousness of environmental pollution, will be attended by Jo In-dong, Seoul City Administrative Deputy Mayor, Jin Ok-dong, CEO of Shinhan Bank, Kim Beom-jun, CEO of Woowa Brothers, Kang Shin-bong, CEO and Executive Officer of Weidaehan Sang-sang, and Kim Myung-gyu, CEO of Coupang Eats Service.

The main contents of this agreement include ▲introducing and promoting the use of reusable container ordering functions within delivery apps ▲promoting campaigns for reusable container use ▲improving public awareness. Seoul City will take charge of administrative and financial support for forming a cooperative body and activating the project, leading efforts to raise public awareness through reusable container campaigns. Delivery app companies will build reusable container usage systems within their apps and support consumers with assistance and promotion. They will also help ensure the cooperative project proceeds efficiently by utilizing data secured through monitoring reusable container delivery orders.

Seoul City has been continuously consulting since February with Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, Coupang Eats?known as the domestic delivery app big three?and Shinhan Bank’s Ttaenggyeoyo to promote the use of reusable containers in order to solve the problem of increasing single-use plastics due to rising delivery demand and to spread an eco-friendly delivery culture.

Starting in May, Seoul City plans to recruit 500 zero-restaurant stores using reusable containers in Gangnam-gu, where offices are concentrated; Gwanak-gu, where many single-person households reside; and Gwangjin-gu, near university campuses, and will begin full-scale project implementation.

Meanwhile, as the issue of household waste including single-use delivery containers on university campuses arises, the city is promoting a "Zero Campus" project free of disposable products and will recruit participating universities starting in May. Reusable container collection boxes will be installed on campuses to support the establishment of a reusable container usage culture within the campus.

Jo In-dong, Seoul City Administrative Deputy Mayor, said, "With the active participation of delivery app companies, more citizens will be able to use eco-friendly delivery services. We expect the eco-friendly consumption culture using reusable delivery containers to spread." He added, "Seoul City will do its best to establish related infrastructure such as zero restaurants and zero campuses using reusable delivery containers so that citizens can easily practice zero waste in their daily lives."
