[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Former Seoul Metropolitan Government Urban Regeneration Headquarters Director Kang Maeng-hoon announces his candidacy for Seongdong District Mayor.
Former Director Kang stated, "On the 21st, I will begin a vigorous challenge for a great Seongdong city."
He said, "I extend my respect and condolences to the residents of Seongdong who have endured and overcome the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic in a long dark tunnel. Seongdong is now at a great starting point, leading Seoul's development from a previously neglected area."
He added, "However, over the past eight years, many opportunities to soar as a global city were missed, such as the development of the Sampyo Remicon site, promotion of the Seongsu Strategic Maintenance Zone, restoration of Seoul Forest, and creation of the Seongsu advanced convergence complex. Since leaving my nest in Haengdang-dong (Hanyang University) 30 years ago, I have watched the stagnation of Seongdong as an urban housing administrator for Seoul. During 11 years of master's and doctoral studies at Hanyang University, I dreamed of a future city and sustainable Seongdong for tomorrow."
He also said, "Seongdong now faces an opportunity comparable to SoHo in New York, USA, a city where the most prosperous future and past coexist in diversity. Specifically, I pledge to attract global advanced companies like Google to the Sampyo Remicon site to establish R&D centers, making it a foundation for future industries and the next generation."
Along with this, he stated, "The Seongsu Strategic Zone will be developed into a luxury residential area surpassing Hudson Yards, creating green pedestrian axes and making Seongsu a proud place where all neighbors can enjoy the previously disconnected Han River together. Like the MIT Media Lab, centered around Hanyang University, Haengdang-dong, Sageun-dong, and Yongdap-dong will become vibrant neighborhoods where residential and advanced research complexes harmonize with youthful energy."
Former Director Kang said, "Together with Seoul Forest, I will connect the waterfront spaces of the Han River, Jungnangcheon Stream, and Cheonggyecheon Stream with the natural parks of Eungbongsan and Maebongsan through a healthy walking network. All pedestrian spaces will be designed so that children, the disabled, and all Seongdong residents can walk without obstacles."
He emphasized, "Seongdong is at a turning point. It will not be a city divided by dark forces that create division, but a bright city for all of us. Please decisively change the gloomy local power in Seongdong that has not changed for the past 12 years. I will lead a great Seongdong full of pride, advancing with Korea and Seoul, leading the era." He earnestly requested support, saying, "Please unite your strength behind Kang Maeng-hoon, the People Power Party candidate with definite competitiveness in the main election."
