[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Kim Yuk-bong·Park Jin-hyung] The candidates for the Democratic Party of Korea's mayoral primaries in Naju City and Hwasun County, Jeollanam-do, have been announced.
According to the Democratic Party of Korea Jeonnam Provincial Party on the 19th, the Naju mayoral primary candidates have been narrowed down to three: Yoon Byung-tae, Lee Min-jun, and Choi Yong-seon. Incumbent Mayor Kang In-gyu of Naju was defeated in the preliminary primary.
The Hwasun County mayoral primary will be a two-way contest between candidates Koo Bok-gyu and Moon Haeng-joo.
The final candidates will be selected through a national participation primary reflecting 50% party members' votes and 50% safe-number voters among the candidates who passed the cut-off. The outcome is expected to be revealed on the 29th.
Disqualified preliminary candidates can request a reconsideration through the Central Party's Public Office Candidate Recommendation Reconsideration Committee within 48 hours starting from 11:50 a.m. on the same day.
Basic council members will be announced after the amendment to the "Ordinance on City/County Council Electoral Districts and Number of Members" is processed at the Jeonnam Provincial Council on the 22nd.
Shin Jeong-hoon, the Naju-Hwasun regional committee chairman, said, "Congratulations to the candidates who passed the preliminary hurdle and are competing in the primary," and urged, "Please uphold the Democratic Party's name with a 'clean election' until the very last moment of the primary."
He added, "We bear the mission to repay the active support and encouragement shown by the people of Honam during the presidential election, overcoming the pain of defeat," emphasizing, "Only reformative, fair, and competent nominations should be the Democratic Party's response."
