Three-Candidate Primaries in 6 Areas, Two-Candidate Primaries in 9 Areas for Local Government Nominations... Haenam-gun Myeong Hyun-gwan Single Nomination
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] The Jeonnam Provincial Party of the Democratic Party of Korea announced the primary candidates and single recommended candidates for the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections.
According to the Jeonnam Provincial Party on the 19th, the Candidate Recommendation Management Committee (Gonggwanwi) decided that among the 22 cities and counties in the Jeonnam region, 20 basic local government head election districts will have primaries, 1 district will have a single nomination, and 1 district is still under review.
There are six districts with three-way primaries: the Naju mayoral primary features Yoon Byung-tae, Lee Min-jun, and Choi Yong-seon; Gwangyang city has Kim Jae-mu, Moon Yang-o, and Lee Yong-jae; Jangseong county has Kim Han-jong, Park Nowon, and Yoo Seong-su; Yeongam county has Bae Yong-tae, Woo Seung-hee, and Jeon Dong-pyeong; Muan county has Kang Byung-guk, Kim Dae-hyun, and Lee Jung-woon; and Sinan county has Kim Haeng-won, Park Seok-bae, and Park Woo-ryang competing for ranking.
Among the nine districts with two-person primaries, Mokpo city has Kang Seong-hwi and Ging Jong-sik; Gokseong county has Lee Sang-cheol and Lee Jae-ho; Goheung county has Gong Young-min and Park Jin-kwon; Boseong county has Kim Cheol-woo and Lim Young-soo; Hwasun county has Koo Bok-gyu and Moon Haeng-ju; Jangheung county has Kwak Tae-soo and Kim Seong; Jindo county has Park In-hwan and Lee Jae-gak; Yeonggwang county has Kim Joon-seong and Lee Dong-kwon; and Hampyeong county has Kim Kyung-ja and Lee Sang-ik.
There are five districts where a two-person runoff vote will be held if no candidate receives a majority in the first primary. The Yeosu mayoral primary includes Kang Hwa-soo, Kwon Oh-bong, Jeon Chang-gon, and Jeong Gi-myeong; Suncheon city has Son Hun-mo, Oh Ha-geun, Jang Man-chae, and Heo Seok; Wando county has Kim Shin, Shin Young-gyun, Shin Woo-cheol, and Ji Young-bae; Gurye county has Kim Soon-ho, Park Yang-bae, Shin Dong-soo, and Wang Hae-jeon; and Gangjin county has Kang Jin-won, Seo Chae-won, and Lee Seung-ok.
Current Haenam county governor Myung Hyun-gwan is the only single recommended candidate for the Haenam county governor race, while the candidate for Damyang county is still under review.
A Jeonnam Provincial Party official stated, “This primary candidate recommendation was designed to provide a fair competition opportunity for young people, women, and candidates challenging for basic local government heads,” adding, “If dissatisfied with the candidate recommendation results, a re-examination can be requested to the central party’s Candidate Recommendation Committee within 48 hours.”
In this announcement, among incumbent mayors, only Kang In-gyu, mayor of Naju, was excluded from nomination by the Jeonnam Provincial Party’s Candidate Recommendation Committee. Previously, Kim San, governor of Muan county, and Yoo Doo-seok, governor of Jangseong county, were also cut off by the central party’s Ethics Tribunal.
