[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Two-Level Green Putting Method"

[Kim Maengnyeong's Golf English Conversation] "Two-Level Green Putting Method" In a two-tier green, controlling the strength is important.

Tips for conquering the ‘two-tiered green.’

A two-tiered green is a putting surface that has two distinct levels. It is also called a ‘double-tiered green’ or ‘two-level green.’ In the UK, it is referred to as a ‘multi-tiered green.’ When playing rounds at foreign golf courses, companions sometimes say, "This green is elevated and double-tiered."

This applies when the hole is located on the upper tier of the two-tiered green. If you putt too softly, the ball will roll back down, and if you hit it too hard, it will overshoot the hole, so the strength of your stroke is crucial. It is wise to divide the distance into two sections and consider them separately. Add the two distances together to judge the total distance. For uphill putting, multiply the height by 3. Putt with three times the usual strength. Imagine a hole located 30cm past the hilltop.

The same applies when the hole is on the lower tier of the two-tiered green. Imagine a virtual hole 30cm in front of the actual hole and putt with one-third less strength than on flat ground. Do not use a different stance or method; stroke with your own rhythm. For reference, when attempting a downhill putt, it is advantageous to grip your putter about six inches down the shaft.

A: This green is elevated and double-tiered. Unfortunately, your ball is on the upper level.

B: This is a tough putt. Can you teach me how you do it?

A: You need to hit the ball firmly enough to keep it rolling smoothly to the hole, but without going too far past it.

B: All right, I will do my best.
