Goheung-gun Accelerates Cultural City Initiative with 'Promotion Committee' Meeting

Sharing Business Operation Plans, Realizing Cultural Autonomy

[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do is accelerating its efforts to be designated as a statutory preliminary cultural city and announced that it held a Cultural City Promotion Committee meeting on the 14th at Heungyang Hall in the county office to create a “mutual care cultural city.”

The Cultural City Promotion Committee (Chairman Song Si-jong) is a public-private governance body consisting of representatives from culture and arts, care, lifelong education, and residents. It reviews various policies for creating a cultural city to realize the future vision of a mutual care cultural city and provides project consultation and deliberation roles.

At this meeting, Kim Ju-yeol, Director of the Goheung Cultural City Center, shared the evaluation of the cultural city creation project and the direction of the 2022 cultural city project plan, and deliberated and approved the preliminary project implementation plan.

Goheung-gun is promoting various projects with residents under the vision of Goheung as a mutual care cultural city, based on the cultural capacity cultivated through two years of cultural city promotion, to be designated as the 5th statutory preliminary cultural city.

If designated as a preliminary city, after one year of preliminary project implementation, it will be finally designated as a statutory cultural city through an evaluation of the preliminary project performance and receive 10 billion KRW in national funding over five years.

To be designated as a cultural city, Goheung residents have voluntarily formed a private cooperative called “Munhwa Motem” and are participating in projects. Munhwa Motem has completed the Motem School education course for training local cultural planners, discovered project agendas by division, and has been promoting a living lab project to experiment with local issues.

Song Gwi-geun, Goheung County Governor, said, “The cultural city is a project led by residents, and I hope for active participation and support so that we can move forward to be designated as a cultural city created together with the residents. We will spread culture in the lives of residents and develop the city into one with self-sustaining power through culture.”
