Attending the 8th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony... "Investigate the Truth, Punish Those Responsible"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Kim Joo-eop, the progressive party candidate for mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, attended the 8th anniversary memorial ceremony of the Sewol ferry disaster at the 5·18 Democracy Square on the morning of the 16th and participated in a picketing event.
Candidate Kim stated, "Eight years have passed without the full investigation of the truth and punishment of those responsible for the Sewol ferry disaster. It is deplorable what the Moon Jae-in administration has done during its five years in office."
He continued, "I am sorry as an adult that the truth has not yet been revealed," and reiterated, "Before the truth is buried, we will definitely investigate the facts and punish those responsible to create a safe society."
He said, "Although the state should prioritize protecting the safety and lives of its citizens, the Sewol ferry disaster has not been fully investigated nor have the responsible parties been punished even after eight years," adding, "The promises made to the families of the Sewol victims have not been kept. There has been no official apology for the state's violence in the disaster."
Finally, he promised, "I ask many citizens to join in not forgetting the lessons of the disaster and revealing the truth," and "I will continue to stand together without pause until recognition and apology for state violence are made."
