[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon stated on the 16th, on the 8th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster, "We will reflect on the meaning of the sacrifices left by the tragedy and strive to make Seoul safer."

On this day, Mayor Oh posted on his social media (SNS), "The past eight years have been a time of pain and suffering for all of us, and at the same time, a time to deeply reflect on the value of safety and life," adding, "Going forward, Seoul will always keep the meaning of the sacrifices left by the Sewol Ferry disaster close to our hearts and work to create a safer Seoul and a safer Republic of Korea so that precious families and neighbors are not lost in vain."

The Democratic Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council also stated in a commentary the day before, "We will prioritize protecting citizens' lives and safety as the top task in our legislative activities to ensure that the sacrifices of the Sewol Ferry are not in vain."

Meanwhile, regarding the demand to reinstall the Sewol Ferry memorial space in the new Gwanghwamun Plaza, scheduled to open in July, Mayor Oh urged self-reflection, saying there has been little change from his previous negative stance.

Earlier, at a press conference marking his first anniversary in office on the 12th, Mayor Oh said about the issue of maintaining the Sewol Ferry memorial space, "I believe it is our responsibility to always keep the meaning of that incident close to our hearts as we carry out our work and policies," but added, "However, I have a different view on whether that memorial space must necessarily be in Gwanghwamun Plaza."
