"Construction of Icheon City as a Cultural Arts and Economic Hub"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Oh Hyeong-seon, former director at the Supreme Court, has officially declared his candidacy for mayor of Icheon City under the People Power Party in the upcoming local elections this June.
Having completed his preliminary candidate registration early on the 13th of last month, Oh held an opening ceremony for his campaign office on the 14th, stating, "I will make Icheon City, the central city of the Republic of Korea and the city with the highest happiness index, a reality."
He further outlined his policy vision, saying, "I will lead the construction of Icheon City that embraces culture and economy by leveraging the region's unique charm of culture and arts and fostering new growth industries in IT and BT."
He also pledged, "I will definitely build a healthy rural city full of rest and leisure, a creative education city that cultivates a second act in life, a safe city free from disasters and calamities, and a secure city for the elderly and vulnerable."
Oh’s top 10 pledges include: ▲ Early realization of a planned city with a population of 350,000 and construction of a high-quality rural city ▲ Creation of a semiconductor parts and materials digital valley ▲ Establishment of a ceramic pottery new materials and biotechnology integrated cluster ▲ Implementation of creative happiness education and lifelong happiness education city ▲ Construction of a safe and secure city free from disasters and calamities ▲ Activation of urban regeneration functions and establishment of urban infrastructure ▲ Development of an unmanned aerial drone and unmanned aerial transport system manufacturing and maintenance cluster ▲ Green health urbanization ▲ Realization of a cultural and arts city ▲ Construction of a veterans’ hall and a comprehensive welfare center for the disabled.
Oh graduated from Icheon Agricultural High School, served as the head of the Criminal Affairs Bureau at Seoul Central District Court, and was a director at the Supreme Court. He also served as the chairman of the Gyeonggi region for Yoon Seok-yeol’s presidential campaign during the 20th presidential election and as the standing head of the Gyeonggi headquarters for Yoon’s presidential campaign. In the 21st general election, he was the overall campaign headquarters chief for National Assembly member Song Seok-jun.
Supporters, National Assembly member Song Seok-jun, former Icheon Mayor Jo Byeong-don, and competing candidates attended Oh’s campaign office opening ceremony, while National Assembly member Joo Ho-young expressed support for Oh through a video message.
Notably, Oh’s son, Oh Jong-min, attracted attention by gifting his father a pair of sneakers symbolizing the message, "You have run your whole life for your family; now run for the citizens of Icheon."
There are five candidates running for mayor of Icheon City under the People Power Party in the June 1 local elections, including former director Oh, Kim Kyung-hee, Kim Young-geon, Ryu Dong-hyuk, and Choi Hyung-geun.
