Gyeongbuk Ulleung-gun Selected as Host for the 4th Island Day in 2023

The First National Event Held in Ulleung-gun

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 17th that Gyeongsangbuk-do Ulleung-gun has been finally selected as the host of the ‘4th Island Day Event 2023’.

So far, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted a public contest from January to February targeting local governments with islands to select the venue for the ‘4th Island Day’ event. As a result, three regions were shortlisted, and after on-site inspections, ‘Gyeongsangbuk-do Ulleung-gun’ was finally selected on the 13th.

The Ministry explained the background for selecting Ulleung-gun, known as the ‘Beautiful Mysterious Island,’ as the final venue, highlighting that it is a representative island tourist destination loved by many citizens and has the advantage of promoting ‘islands’ and ‘Island Day.’ Especially, it received high evaluations for the fact that from August 8, ‘Island Day,’ to August 15, ‘Liberation Day,’ the value and importance of Dokdo can be promoted.

From August 8 to August 14, the ‘3rd Island Day’ event will be held in Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do. Various events where visitors can enjoy and experience will be held on several islands centered around the Gogunsan Archipelago, including the Saemangeum Convention Center, where the commemorative ceremony and exhibition hall will be operated, Seonyudo, and Maldo. For citizens who find it difficult to visit the site, an ‘online exhibition hall’ will also be operated to experience the islands remotely, and diverse participation events (events) through social networking services (SNS) will be prepared.

Minister Jeon Hae-cheol said, “Island Day was established to allow many citizens to enjoy and feel island experience events and to raise awareness of the value of islands,” adding, “We will continue to strive to widely promote the value and charm of Korea’s islands through Island Day events.”
