[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The daily number of COVID-19 cases in Shanghai, China, has surged, with the total number of confirmed cases, including asymptomatic ones, approaching 28,000.


On the 14th, the Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported, citing Shanghai's epidemic prevention authorities, that the number of confirmed cases in the city reached 27,719 as of the previous day. This is higher than the peak of 26,330 recorded on the 12th. Among them, 25,146 were asymptomatic cases, and 2,573 were symptomatic cases.


According to Shanghai's epidemic prevention authorities, since March 1, there have been 9 severe cases among the confirmed patients, all elderly aged between 70 and 93. Most are known to have underlying conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases.


According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his visit to Hainan Island in southern China on the 13th, stated that "(COVID-19) prevention and control efforts cannot be relaxed," indicating the continuation of strengthened epidemic prevention guidelines and city lockdown policies.


Data confirmed on this day shows that the nationwide daily new confirmed cases in China are 29,317, with most cases identified in Shanghai. Additionally, 68 cases were reported in Guangdong Province in southern China, and 999 cases were added in Jilin Province in northeastern China.
