Applications Open from the 5th to the 13th of Next Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Arts & Culture Education Service announced on the 14th that it will open a public recruitment for the artistic director who will oversee the exhibition planning of the Korean Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition.
Applications will be accepted from the 15th of this month until the 13th of next month. The Arts Council plans to make the final selection in June through document screening and exhibition plan evaluation (presentation and interview).
The Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition will be held from May 20 to November 26 next year at Castello Park and the Arsenale area in Venice, Italy. The Venice Biennale Foundation selected architect and founder of the Africa Future Foundation, Leslie Loko, as the general director last December. The exhibition theme has not yet been decided.
The Arts Council will apply an improvement plan for the operation of the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale starting from next year’s architecture exhibition to enhance fairness and professionalism.
The plan includes decentralizing the authority concentrated in the selection committee and establishing an advisory committee to create a dual organizational structure for operation.
The advisory committee will consist of four appointed members and one ex officio member. The term of office is two years. During their term, the members will advise on the operation of the Korean Pavilion, plans for selecting the artistic director, and recommend candidates for the artistic director selection committee.
The existing selection committee, which included two ex officio members, will be composed entirely of appointed members starting from next year’s architecture exhibition. This is a measure to enhance professionalism.
Additionally, all applicants and selection committee members must submit a pledge for fair evaluation. Verification of grounds for disqualification and recusal will also be conducted. In particular, if misconduct such as contact with selection committee members occurs, the involved member will be excluded from Arts Council evaluations for 10 years. The applicant will be excluded from the selection target.
An Arts Council official said, "We plan to continuously listen to opinions from the art and architecture fields and apply the measures according to the characteristics of each exhibition field. We will strive to make the Korean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale a hub that showcases the excellence of our art and architecture."
