[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Seulgina Cho] Hyundai Motor's luxury brand Genesis unveiled a new electric vehicle concept on the 13th (local time) and announced its first plan for local production in the United States.
On the evening of the same day, Genesis held the 'Genesis House Design Night' for local media at the brand's complex cultural space 'Genesis House' in Manhattan, New York City, and revealed the 'X Speedium Coupe' concept.
The X Speedium Coupe was created to share the direction of future electric vehicle design based on Genesis's design philosophy and inspiration for the future. It is an evolved concept model from the 'Genesis X' unveiled in March last year. Unlike typical concept models made with mass production in mind, the vehicle's form and class are not defined.
Luke Donkerwolke, Vice President of Hyundai Motor and Chief Creative Officer (CCO) of Genesis, said, "It is a kind of design model born from a free design exercise process without a formalized process," adding, "This experimental model embodies the DNA of the Genesis brand and shows the infinite possibilities of future electric vehicle design."
The name X Speedium Coupe was inspired by a representative racing track in Korea where Genesis designers experienced the joy of driving.
Design-wise, it inherits the reductive design principle of "less is more" that has been applied to Genesis so far. The company emphasized that the clean lines and exquisite curves placed in the right places show refined luxury.
At the front of the vehicle, the representative design elements of Genesis, ‘Two Lines’ and ‘Wing Face,’ can be seen evolving to suit the electrification era. Although the grille function is omitted due to the nature of electric vehicles, Genesis reinterpreted its unique ‘Crest Grille’ design into two lines.
When viewed from above, the concept model applies an 'hourglass silhouette' style. The curved wheel arch parts seen from above create a visual effect as if muscles are present. The headlamps, which integrate daytime running lights, low beams, high beams, and turn signals, embody the future design direction in line with the electric vehicle era.
The X Speedium Coupe features ‘Inje Green,’ a deep emerald green metallic color inspired by colors often used in classic cars.
At the event, Genesis announced that the electrified model of the GV70 will be the brand's first electric vehicle model produced locally in the United States.
Starting production of the GV70 electrified model at Hyundai Motor's Alabama plant in December, the company plans to strengthen its response to the demand for electric vehicles in the U.S. and expand its market share.
Along with this, Genesis announced the launch of the local purchase program 'Priority One' for its first dedicated electric vehicle, the GV60. Genesis has maintained a sales growth trend for 16 consecutive months in the U.S. market since December 2020.
Meanwhile, Genesis House in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, where the event was held, opened in November last year as a complex cultural space including a restaurant, library, tea pavilion, and terrace garden, beyond a simple vehicle exhibition space. It is a customized space designed to showcase the Genesis brand, consisting of three floors including one basement floor, with an area of approximately 4,340 square meters.
On the basement first floor where the Genesis House Design Night was held, there is a multipurpose space called 'Cellar Stage' where various events such as new car launch events can be held. The first floor is an exhibition space where visitors can experience various vehicles from the entire Genesis lineup to concept models embodying the future brand vision. The second floor is a cultural experience space that modernly reinterprets Korean unique beauty and traditional values under the theme of 'Enjoying Korean Daily Life,' featuring ▲Tea Pavilion ▲Library ▲Genesis House Restaurant ▲Terrace Garden.
