[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The documentary film "You Are Jo Guk," which depicts the conflict surrounding the appointment of former Minister of Justice Jo Guk, will be released in May.
On the 14th, Et9 Film announced, "'You Are Jo Guk' will be screened at 2 p.m. on June 1st at the 23rd Jeonju International Film Festival," adding, "We will conduct crowdfunding ahead of the release."
"You Are Jo Guk" tells the story of the 67 days from August 9, 2019, when Jo Guk was nominated as Minister of Justice, until his resignation on October 14.
The film's team explained, "It deals with what we witnessed when the prosecution, having lost its sense of justice, carried out a brutal hunt. It questions whether we can be confident that the old power, which fosters oblivion and distorts the direction of democracy, the resistance to reform, and the prosecution's blade, are not aimed at us."
They added, "This is not just about Jo Guk alone, but the same pattern is repeated in cases such as former Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook, KBS President Jung Yeon-ju, the Minerva case, and even the death of the late President Roh Moo-hyun. The title of the film also signifies that someday I or someone around me could become Jo Guk."
Director Lee Seung-jun, who was the first Korean to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short for the documentary "Absent Memory," which dealt with the Sewol ferry disaster, directed the film.
Director Lee stated, "The film is not a judgment on the Jo Guk incident. It is a story about the frames imposed by the media and prosecutorial powers, and the erased questions and directions. To that end, we intend to review the period from August to October 2019."
