[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The White House is considering sending a top U.S. official directly to Ukraine to express support. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are among the candidates mentioned.
On the 13th (local time), Politico reported, citing U.S. government officials, that "the White House is discussing a plan for a meeting between a top U.S. official and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine."
While President Biden and Vice President Harris are mentioned as candidates, a U.S. government official said it is much more likely that a senior cabinet member such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken will lead the delegation. Both President Biden and Vice President Harris recently visited Poland, a NATO member country bordering Ukraine.
If a top U.S. official's visit to Ukraine materializes, it is expected to carry significant symbolism for both the U.S. and Ukraine. However, a U.S. government official stated, "Due to security concerns, it will inevitably be a surprise visit without prior announcement, so the timing cannot be predicted at this point," adding, "Considering the volatility of the situation, there is also a possibility that it may not happen."
