CU, Pick&Pick Rental Service Usage Increases 5 Times, Subscribers Up 12 Times
Usage Centered on MZ Generation... 20s 27.3%, 30s 41.6%, 40s 22.8%
Expanded to Over 40 Stores, Available at PocketCU Stores
[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] CU's 'Pick & Pick Rental Service' has gained popularity, recording a fivefold increase in rental transactions within three months of its launch. Pick & Pick is a service at CU that allows customers to rent over 300 types of the latest products for a minimum of three days. Instead of purchasing new products, customers can rent them short-term to directly experience and determine whether they need them, allowing for comparison.
CU announced on the 14th that the number of Pick & Pick rental service transactions last month increased by 488.5% compared to January, the first month of its launch. During the same period, the number of subscribers to the Pick & Pick webpage service increased twelvefold.
CU cited the popularity of the Pick & Pick rental service to the fact that the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z), who favor rational consumption and are receptive to new services, actively used it. Looking at users by age group, 27.3% were in their 20s, 41.6% in their 30s, 22.8% in their 40s, and 8.3% others, with about 70% of users belonging to the 20s and 30s age groups.
As the number of users increased, the proportion of rentals lasting more than 15 days rose from 37.3% in January to 45.6% last month, an increase of 8.3 percentage points, and the number of customers who used the service more than twice tripled during the same period.
The most rented product was the 'Dyson Airwrap Styler,' which recently experienced a 'sold-out frenzy.' The average rental period for this product was about 22 days, more than twice the average for general beauty devices (within 10 days). The Galaxy Watch4, AirPods Pro, iPad 8th generation, and LG CineBeam also ranked among popular rental products. Smart devices accounted for 38.8% of total rental transactions.
Around Double, the operator of the service, strengthened its lineup with the latest trendy products targeting 'outing groups,' such as the Samsung The Freestyle portable beam projector, camping sets for four people, and beginner golf club sets.
Starting this month, CU will expand the number of stores offering the Pick & Pick rental service from the existing five to about 40 stores in the metropolitan area. The names of newly opened stores can be checked on the membership app Pocket CU.
Yeol Lee, head of the BGF Retail Service Platform Team, said, "The Pick & Pick rental service reflects customers' changed lifestyles, such as the activation of secondhand trading and shortened trend cycles, allowing customers to experience various products in a short time, which has led to a positive response. We will continue to increase the number of stores introducing the service."
Meanwhile, CU is providing discount coupons immediately usable to customers who newly sign up on the Pick & Pick webpage and is also holding an event where the first 1,000 customers who use the service by June will receive CU mobile gift certificates.
