[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The Sangbong Terminal Urban Maintenance-type Redevelopment Project in Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has officially begun.
Jungnang-gu announced that the redevelopment project to transform the aging Sangbong Terminal into a large-scale complex has passed the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Architectural Committee review on the 12th.
Opened in 1985, Sangbong Terminal (around 83 Sangbong-dong) saw a sharp decline in users due to overlapping routes with the nearby Dong Seoul Terminal. As a result, the terminal lost most of its function and became outdated, prompting ongoing discussions about land utilization.
Accordingly, the district has been striving to pass the traffic impact assessment and the Seoul Architectural Committee review to get the redevelopment project on track.
The large-scale complex at Sangbong Terminal is scheduled to begin construction in January 2024 and be completed by December 2027. It will consist of five residential-commercial mixed-use buildings with 49 floors above ground and a total floor area of 289,905 m², providing 999 apartment units and 308 officetel units. The lower floors will house retail and cultural facilities, creating an open space freely accessible to local residents, and is expected to be reborn as a landmark in the northeastern area of Seoul.
The public contribution facilities will also include spaces for youth and adolescents. The Youth Dream Hub Center and the Youth Complex Cultural Center, offering counseling, education, and cultural programs, will be established to build welfare infrastructure for young people. Additionally, roads around the project site will be expanded to alleviate traffic congestion caused by large-scale retail facilities such as Costco nearby.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We expect that the supply of large-scale commercial facilities and housing through the Sangbong Terminal Urban Maintenance-type Redevelopment Project will greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
The district is currently considering installing a temporary terminal to minimize inconvenience for terminal users during the project period.
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) will hold an opening ceremony for the Environmental Education Center (315-9 Sinnnae-dong) on the 19th and begin full-scale operations.
The Jungnang-gu Environmental Education Center is expected to serve as a hub for local environmental education by collaborating with educational institutions and local environmental organizations.
The Environmental Education Center was built in Sinnnae Eoul Park with a total floor area of 755㎡ across basement level 1 to the 2nd floor, with a budget of 3.28 billion KRW.
On the basement first floor inside the center, an experiential exhibition room featuring interactive media content allows visitors to experience the severity of marine environmental pollution.
The first floor includes a permanent exhibition space on the climate crisis open to everyone and dedicated experiential education rooms for toddlers and elementary school children. The second floor is designed as a lecture room for environmental expert education and experiential education linked to smart farms and vegetable gardens.
The district plans to support environmental education at local educational institutions focusing on biodiversity education needed in the era of environmental change and climate crisis, and provide healing programs for local seniors.
The center’s opening ceremony will be held at 4:30 PM on the 19th. It will begin with a sound circus performance using recycled instruments, followed by a commemorative tree planting, and a viewing of the special exhibition “From Plastic to Chair” and zero-waste products.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We will do our best to establish Jungnang-gu as a green environmental city through the Environmental Education Center,” adding, “We will strive to spread environmental protection and zero-waste culture so that everyone can actively respond to the climate crisis and environmental issues together.”
This month, the Environmental Education Center will hold special lectures on making plastic-free soap and natural toothpaste, and on the theme “The 4th Industrial Revolution and the Environment.” Applications can be made through the Jungnang-gu Office website under Welfare Education → Jungnang-gu Environmental Education Center.
