Seoul City Activates 'Cooling Road'... Fine Dust and Road Temperature Down

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 12th that the 'Cooling Road' installed on the road centerline to remove dust generated on the road and lower the road temperature heated up in summer will be fully operational from April.

The Cooling Road is a water spraying facility installed in small square shapes on the road centerline, operated to cool down roads heated by the scorching summer heat and to remove fine dust. It has the effect of lowering ground temperature by 7 to 9℃ in midsummer and reducing fine dust by 12㎍/㎥.

In Seoul, Cooling Roads are installed at a total of 13 locations (3.5 km), including City Hall Station, Gusan Station, Hyochang Park Station, Balsan Station, Jeungmi Station, Deungchon Station, Magoknaru Station, Isu Station, Jongno 3-ga Station, Jongno 5-ga Station, Junghwa Station, Janghanpyeong Station, and Geoyeo Station. The Cooling Road installed at Deungchon Station is also used as an automatic brine system in preparation for snowfall according to the winter snow removal measures.

Using underground water discarded from subway stations, water is sprayed onto the road surface. During midsummer (June to September), it is sprayed more than three times a day to lower the heated road temperature, and in April to May and October, when fine dust is severe, it is operated flexibly according to fine dust alerts.

Lee Jeong-hwa, head of the Road Management Division of Seoul City, said, “By using water discharged and discarded from subway stations to spray on the road surface, we expect to lower the asphalt surface temperature and reduce fine dust generated by tire dust, etc. We will closely analyze the effects of Cooling Road operation and gradually expand its installation in the future.”
