[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] The Korea Exchange's revenue surpassed 1 trillion won for the first time last year. This is attributed to a sharp increase in domestic stock investors due to the 'Donghak Ant Movement,' which led to a significant rise in trading, clearing and settlement fees, as well as securities firms' commissions.

According to the financial investment industry on the 11th, the Korea Exchange announced in its audit report that its consolidated revenue last year reached 1.3493 trillion won. This represents an approximately 37.9% increase compared to 978.3 billion won in 2020. Operating profit was 585.3 billion won, up 91.0% from 306.4 billion won the previous year. Both revenue and operating profit are record highs.

The significant increase in the Korea Exchange's revenue and operating profit is analyzed to be due to the surge in domestic stock investors, which greatly increased market fees.

Trading and clearing settlement fees totaled 598.6 billion won, a 61.2% increase from the previous year. Securities firms' commissions rose 68.4% to 147.2 billion won. A Korea Exchange official explained, "Stock trading itself increased significantly last year, and the surge in trading volume led to a corresponding increase in commission income."

According to the Exchange, the total annual trading amount in the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets last year reached 6766 trillion won. This is more than an 18% increase compared to the previous year's total trading amount of 5707 trillion won.
