[Asia Economy Reporter Junyi Park] The Democratic Party of Korea announced at a meeting between floor leaders of the two major parties that it will present a "final negotiation card" regarding the passage of political reform measures, including the introduction of a multi-member district system for basic councilors.
The Democratic Party held a 'D-24 Hours to Multi-Member District System Press Conference' at the National Assembly and made this statement. Lawmaker Kim Young-bae told reporters, "There is a scheduled meeting today between Kwon Seong-dong, floor leader of the People Power Party, and Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party," adding, "Floor Leader Park is expected to propose the final negotiation card to Floor Leader Kwon."
He added, "I understand that negotiations will take place within a range that somewhat accepts the opinions both parties have commonly advocated," and urged, "We call for a progressive change in the stance of the People Power Party."
Lawmaker Kim explained, "The Democratic Party's existing position is that it would be good to accept the multi-member district system for basic councilors," and said, "There have been demands to increase the number of metropolitan committee members, especially focusing on local areas. If possible, Floor Leader Park plans to propose a compromise plan that balances these two aspects to some extent."
