[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] An Min-seok, a member of the Democratic Party running as a preliminary candidate for Governor of Gyeonggi Province, publicly proposed candidate unification to his competitors, Assemblyman Cho Jung-sik and former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young.
On the morning of the 10th, Assemblyman An held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office and stated, "For the Democratic Party to win the Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial election, continue the development of Gyeonggi Province, and protect democracy against the reckless actions of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, I respectfully propose a three-way unification to candidates Cho Jung-sik and Yeom Tae-young, who have registered as candidates for Governor of Gyeonggi Province."
He added, "The three of us, who have worked together to realize the identity and values of the Democratic Party, share the same political roots, so there is justification and necessity for unification," and "Moreover, if unification creates a one-on-one contest against Kim Dong-yeon, leader of the New Wave, the Democratic Party primary will attract attention and will clearly become a decisive opportunity for victory in the Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial election."
He continued, "We have nothing left to lose after the presidential election defeat," and "The only way to survive is victory in the June 1 Gyeonggi Province election. We cannot afford to lose twice. If the three of us?Yeom Tae-young, Cho Jung-sik, and I?boldly decide to sacrifice ourselves and revive the Democratic Party, unification agreement could be possible even today."
He also said, "Above all, many Democratic Party members and residents of Gyeonggi Province are requesting the three of us to unify," and "Furthermore, supporters of candidates Cho Jung-sik and Yeom Tae-young are also saying that three-way unification is essential for the Democratic Party's victory. Unification is necessary for the Democratic Party to become one."
He concluded, "I will wait for responses from candidates Cho Jung-sik and Yeom Tae-young regarding my public proposal," and "Considering various conditions for opinion polls, there is not much time left. I respectfully request that the two candidates respond by Tuesday, the 12th, at the latest."
