[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-chul] Kim Jin-tae, the preliminary candidate for governor of Gangwon Province from the People Power Party, pledged to "develop Wonju City into a semiconductor hub city."
On the 8th, Kim Jin-tae held a press conference at the Wonju City Hall briefing room and stated, "I confirmed through a phone call with Chu Kyung-ho, the coordinator of the Planning and Coordination Subcommittee of the Presidential Transition Committee, that a practical review has begun regarding the proposal to attract Samsung Electronics to Wonju."
He added, "Yesterday (the 7th), President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol flew over Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek plant by helicopter and expressed his determination to further develop the semiconductor industry and elevate it to a world-class level."
Previously, the day before, Kim Jin-tae visited the Presidential Transition Committee in Tongui-dong and delivered a proposal letter regarding the attraction of Samsung Electronics to Wonju to Ahn Cheol-soo, the chairman of the transition committee. Chairman Ahn expressed sympathy with the contents of the proposal and instructed the Planning and Finance Subcommittee of the transition committee to review it.
Regarding the recent criticism by former Wonju Mayor Won Chang-mook that "70% of the Buron complex, the proposed site, has been pre-sold, making the attraction of a semiconductor factory unrealistic," Kim responded, "I thought that was the Pyeongtaek mayor speaking. Are you also opposed to designating Wonju as a semiconductor hub city?" He questioned, "Countries around the world like India and Vietnam are asking us to come, but are you saying Wonju should not?"
He also stated, "According to the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, the Buron complex is entirely unsold with no completed contracts," and added, "We will further investigate and respond to these claims, which are close to falsehoods."
He continued, "There are no completed sales contracts in the Buron complex. The national industrial complex site has not yet been designated and is currently undergoing a feasibility study, so it is naturally unsold. I am not sure if there are any purchase commitments for the general industrial complex, but there are no completed sales contracts. (Refer to Korea Industrial Complex Corporation data.)"
Former National Assembly member Lee Kang-hoo, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Wonju from the People Power Party, also publicly proposed attracting Samsung’s semiconductor factory to Wonju to the transition committee.
Meanwhile, regarding the Democratic Party candidates, he criticized, "No one has applied for the Gangwon Province governor nomination from the Democratic Party, making Gangwon and Gyeongbuk the only provinces nationwide with zero candidates," and said, "This is a disrespectful act toward Gangwon Province. It would be better to simply cooperate with the People Power Party."
