[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] In the People Power Party's nomination primary for metropolitan mayoral candidates in the June 1 local elections, Busan Mayor Park Hyung-jun and Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo ran unopposed, effectively securing their nominations. In Daegu, eight candidates including Representative Hong Joon-pyo, former Supreme Council member Kim Jae-won, lawyer Yoo Young-ha, and former Daejeon MBC president Lee Jin-sook competed, recording the highest competition rate nationwide. The People Power Party's Nomination Management Committee began document screening and interviews for applicants on the 7th and plans to finalize primary candidates by the 14th.


According to the party's nomination committee on the 7th, three candidates, including Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, applied for the Seoul mayoral election nomination. For the Gyeonggi Province governor election, six candidates submitted applications: former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min, Representative Kim Eun-hye, lawyer Kang Yong-seok, former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Shim Jae-chul, Kyung Hee University adjunct professor Cheon Gang-jeong, and former People Power Party Gyeonggi joint election committee chairman Ham Jin-gyu. However, lawyer Kang Yong-seok was denied reinstatement to the party on the same day, hindering his primary challenge. In Incheon, four candidates, including two former mayors Ahn Sang-soo and Yoo Jeong-bok, former Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office Special 2 Division chief Shim Jae-don, and former lawmaker Lee Hak-jae, are competing.


Following Daegu, regions with high competition rates were Ulsan and Jeju. Seven candidates vied in the Ulsan mayoral primary, including Representative Seo Beom-su, Representative Lee Chae-ik, and former Ulsan Nam-gu district chief Kim Doo-gyeom. In Jeju, seven candidates applied, including accountant Kim Yong-chul, former Ministry of Strategy and Finance Planning and Coordination Office chief Moon Seong-yu, former People Power Party Jeju provincial party chairman Jang Seong-cheol, and former Jeju University president Heo Hyang-jin.


In Honam, a region where the People Power Party is weak, two candidates each applied. In Gwangju, adjunct professor Ju Ki-hwan of Honam University and adjunct professor Ha Heon-sik of Chosun University ran. In Jeonbuk, special professor Kim Yong-ho of Jeonbuk National University and former People Power Party Jeonbuk election committee standing election committee chairman Yang Jeong-mu competed. In Jeonnam, former Blue House chief Lee Jeong-hyun and advisory committee member of the Presidential Transition Committee Lee Joong-hyo contested the primary.


In Chungbuk, former minister and special advisor to President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol Kim Young-hwan, former lawmaker Lee Hye-hoon, former Ministry of Public Administration and Security first vice minister Park Kyung-guk, and former lawmaker Oh Je-se competed. In Chungnam, Professor Kim Dong-wan and former Ministry of Public Administration and Security first vice minister Park Chan-woo completed their nominations. In Sejong, four candidates including lawyer Sung Seon-je, former professor Song Gwang-young, and People Power Party Policy Committee vice chairman Choi Min-ho competed. In Daejeon, five candidates including former Daejeon Mayor Park Seong-hyo, former lawmaker Lee Jang-woo, lawyer Jang Dong-hyuk, former Chungnam National University president Jeong Sang-cheol, and former lawmaker Jeong Yong-gi completed their nominations.


For the Gangwon Province governor election, former lawmaker Kim Jin-tae and former KBS anchor Hwang Sang-mu are expected to have a fierce nomination competition.


In Gyeongnam, Representative Park Wan-su and former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Lee Ju-young applied for nomination.


In this June local election, a total of 62 candidates applied for the People Power Party metropolitan mayoral nominations across 17 cities and provinces nationwide, recording a competition rate of 3.64 to 1. The nomination committee plans to conduct document screening for metropolitan mayoral applicants on the 7th, hold interviews from the 8th, and sequentially finalize primary candidates from the 12th to the 14th.
