Gokseong-gun Creates Jangjuk Tree Forest to Commemorate Arbor Day

[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-sun] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, commemorated the 77th Arbor Day by planting 300 Machilus thunbergii trees in the Gagok-ri area of Ogok-myeon on the 5th.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, only a minimal number of staff from the forestry department attended the tree planting event. After learning the proper tree planting techniques, the employees each received seedlings and carefully planted the trees in designated planting sections.

This year, considering the high value of Machilus thunbergii as timber, Gokseong-gun selected it as the species for tree planting.

Additionally, since Machilus thunbergii is a long-term tree species that takes about 50 years until harvesting, it was chosen for its ability to serve the forest role over a long period.

Machilus thunbergii is a large tree; its wood is dark reddish-brown with a glossy finish, beautiful grain, and hardness.

Its wide range of uses includes various tools and it is also used as a material for high-end furniture.

An official from the county stated, “The importance of forests is growing as we take steps toward overcoming the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality. On the occasion of the 77th Arbor Day, let us pilot plant Machilus thunbergii, which can specialize our region, to promote the production of large-diameter timber and spread the atmosphere of achieving carbon zero.”
