Jinju-si Challenges to Become the Nation's Top 'Carbon Neutral Green City'

Linking Greenhouse Gas Reduction Projects, Emphasizing Expansion and Sustainability

Symbolism of a 'City with a Green Ecological System,' Leading Role as a Pioneer City

Jinju-si Challenges to Become the Nation's Top 'Carbon Neutral Green City' Overview of the Carbon Neutral Green City Contest Project.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Jinju City in Gyeongnam has completed its application to be selected as the nation’s top ‘Carbon Neutral Green City’ in the 40 billion KRW carbon-neutral green city contest hosted by the Ministry of Environment, representing Gyeongnam Province.

This contest is a project newly launched this year by the Ministry of Environment to establish a regional-centered carbon neutrality implementation and diffusion system.

The contest is open to local governments nationwide, and after a comprehensive evaluation of the excellence of project promotion conditions, the pioneering nature of project plans, and the proactiveness of promotion systems, two local governments will be selected.

Since 2010, Jinju City has established a comprehensive climate change response plan to create an eco-friendly green city. It has built a foundation and participated in a pilot project for carbon emission trading among public institutions. Due to its greenhouse gas reduction achievements, it was selected as an excellent institution for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012, receiving institutional commendations and enhancing its image as a leading city in climate change response.

Additionally, by properly managing the total discharge load of water pollution, it contributes to securing national water resources that can stably maintain the water quality of the Namgang River.

Since 2021, the city has also been working to build a cooperative network to jointly respond to local carbon neutrality issues by signing green social contribution agreements with public institutions in the area for the management of pleasant and beautiful parks and green spaces.

In this contest application, the city actively linked existing greenhouse gas reduction projects to present synergistic effects and emphasized diffusion and sustainability.

With the vision of ‘Green Water City Good for Walking Under the Sunshine,’ it proposed core projects in five areas: ▲ eco-friendly energy transition ▲ expansion of carbon sinks ▲ promotion of resource circulation ▲ establishment of climate-resilient infrastructure (HW) and social transition (SW).

Deputy Mayor Shin Jong-woo said, “Starting with this contest application, we will promote various projects to enhance climate change response capabilities and actively respond to multiple contests to become a leading city model for decarbonized energy.”
