[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 6th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will hold a tree planting event at the park above the Yulgok-ro Tunnel, which is set to open this summer.
The event is held in celebration of the '77th Arbor Day.' Mayor Oh will plant cornelian cherry and plum trees with citizens and personally walk along the currently under-construction pedestrian path to inspect the final stages of the construction. On the day before Arbor Day, Mayor Oh also held a tree planting event at Gwanghwamun Square, which is scheduled to fully open this July.
The 'Yulgok-ro Tunnel Upper Park' is being created to connect Changgyeonggung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, which were severed when the Japanese colonial government built Yulgok-ro in 1932, through a green ecological axis. The project began in 2010 during Mayor Oh's previous term and is scheduled for completion this summer. After taking office in April last year, Mayor Oh visited this site as his first project inspection to check the construction status.
Yulgok-ro was expanded from the existing four lanes to six lanes and opened in 2019. Above the Yulgok-ro Tunnel, pedestrian paths, green spaces, and walls are being constructed. When the tunnel upper park opens this summer, it is expected to be transformed into a comfortable and pleasant walking space where the traditional palace walls and natural greenery harmonize.
