[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The admission of Cho Min, daughter of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, to the Pusan National University School of Medicine has been canceled, drawing attention to the decision of Korea University as well.

Korea University has been conducting the review process for Cho's admission cancellation for eight months. They are currently reviewing the Supreme Court ruling that confirmed the conviction of former Dongyang University professor Jeong Gyeongshim for admission fraud.

A Korea University official stated, "We understand that the Admission Cancellation Review Committee is discussing the matter comprehensively, including the court ruling."

Hanyoung Foreign Language High School, from which Cho graduated, is also undergoing the procedure to amend her school records. According to the Ministry of Education's directive, if there is supporting evidence such as a final court ruling to modify student records, the matter must be reviewed by the school's Academic Performance Management Committee.

According to data submitted by People Power Party lawmaker Hwang Bo-seunghee from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Hanyoung Foreign Language High School held an Academic Performance Management Committee meeting on the 23rd of last month to discuss the legalities and procedures for reviewing the amendment of Cho's student records.

On January 27, the Supreme Court upheld the original sentence of four years imprisonment for Jeong Gyeongshim, Cho's mother and Dongyang University professor, for admission fraud, and judged that Cho's seven major credentials were false.

The seven major credentials are ▲ Dongyang University president’s certificate of commendation and research confirmation ▲ Dongyang University Language Education Center research assistant activity confirmation ▲ Dankook University Medical Science Research Institute internship and paper ▲ Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) internship experience ▲ Aqua Palace Hotel and Intercontinental Hotel internship certificates ▲ Kongju National University Life Science Research Institute internship certificate ▲ Seoul National University Public Interest and Human Rights Law Center internship confirmation.

If Hanyoung Foreign Language High School amends the student records, it could also affect Korea University's admission cancellation. Four of the credentials Cho used for admission to Korea University include the Dankook University Medical Science Research Institute internship.

However, it has been confirmed that Korea University has not requested student record materials from Hanyoung Foreign Language High School since September of last year.

In response to lawmaker Hwang Bo-seunghee's inquiry about whether the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education submitted Cho's student records to Korea University, the office replied, "Since August 31, 2021, Korea University has not requested additional submission of Cho's student records, and no student records were submitted."

Meanwhile, Pusan National University held a faculty meeting this afternoon and made the final decision to cancel Cho's admission to the School of Medicine. Attention is also focused on whether the Ministry of Health and Welfare will revoke Cho's medical license. Even if a medical license has been issued, if the degree is canceled, the license qualification cannot be maintained.

Cho entered Korea University’s Department of Environmental Ecology Engineering in 2010 and was admitted to Pusan National University School of Medicine through early admission in 2015, but her admission was canceled after seven years. She passed the national medical licensing exam in January last year and worked as an intern at Hanil Hospital.
