[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Woo Beom-gi, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Jeonju, announced on the 4th that he will provide a monthly allowance of 100,000 won to restore the honor of participants in the Donghak Peasant Revolution and improve the welfare of their bereaved families.

The recipients are children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of revolution participants who currently have their resident registration in Jeonju and have lived there for more than one year as of the application date, and who possess a bereaved family notification issued by the Honor Restoration Deliberation Committee.

According to the Jeonju-Wanju branch of the Donghak Revolution Bereaved Families Association (Branch Chief Park Jong-ho), there are currently 465 bereaved family members of the Donghak Peasant Revolution residing in Jeonju, including great-grandchildren.

Preliminary candidate Woo said, “I will continue to widely promote the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which was the starting point of the democratization movement in the Republic of Korea, and pay attention to ensuring that the bereaved families receive proper respect.”

Meanwhile, the bereaved family allowance was first provided by Jeongeup, the birthplace of the Donghak Revolution, in 2020, the first among local governments nationwide.
