Yoo Seung-min and Kim Dong-yeon, 3.5%p Gap in Multi-Candidate Race... Within Margin of Error

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Yoo Seung-min, former lawmaker and the People Power Party candidate for Gyeonggi Province governor, is shown to be slightly ahead within the margin of error in a hypothetical multi-candidate race for the June 1 local election against Kim Dong-yeon, leader of the New Wave party and the Democratic Party candidate.

According to a public opinion poll conducted by Realmeter on behalf of Asia Economy on April 4, targeting 1,009 men and women aged 18 and older in Gyeonggi Province (automated phone survey method, 90% mobile, 10% landline), when asked "Which candidate do you think will perform well as governor of Gyeonggi Province," former lawmaker Yoo recorded 23.3%, ranking first.


Leader Kim Dong-yeon followed with 19.8%. The gap between the two candidates was 3.5 percentage points, which is within the margin of error.


By age group, Yoo had higher support among those in their 20s (31.2%), while Kim led in the 40s and 50s age groups (23.7%, 24.7%). Additionally, among men, Yoo received the highest support (29.1%), whereas among women, Kim had the highest support rate (18.4%).


Next in line were former lawmaker Yoon Hee-sook (10.6%), former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young (9.4%), lawmaker Ahn Min-seok (9.1%), and lawmaker Kim Eun-hye (8.1%).


The percentage of respondents who answered "other candidates" was 3.6%, while the undecided group, combining "none" (3.8%) and "don't know" (2.5%), accounted for 6.3%.


This survey was conducted by Realmeter on behalf of Asia Economy from April 1 (Friday) to April 2 (Saturday). Calls were attempted to 77,535 eligible voters aged 18 and older in Gyeonggi Province, with a final 1,009 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a response rate of 1.3%. The survey used an automated response method with 90% mobile and 10% landline calls, employing random digit dialing based on a randomly generated sampling frame. Statistical adjustments were made using rim weighting by gender, age group, and region based on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s resident registration population statistics as of the end of February 2022. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
