A Close Race Within the Margin of Error by 1.6%p
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] In this year's June 1 local elections, a survey showed that former Deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong-yeon and former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min would have a close race within the margin of error if they faced each other.
According to a public opinion poll commissioned by Asia Economy to Realmeter, conducted among 1,009 men and women aged 18 and over in Gyeonggi Province (automatic response phone survey method, 90% mobile, 10% landline), when former Deputy Prime Minister Kim, running as the Democratic Party candidate for governor of Gyeonggi Province, and former lawmaker Yoo, who declared his candidacy for governor from the People Power Party, were hypothetically matched, Yoo received 37.6% support while Kim received 36.0%. The gap between the two candidates was 1.6%, showing a close race within the margin of error.
Deputy Prime Minister Kim showed strength among those in their 50s (43.5%), 40s (41.9%), and Democratic Party supporters (72.7%). Former lawmaker Yoo led among those in their 30s (44.0%), ages 18-29 (43.6%), those aged 60 and over (41.6%), men (41.5%), and People Power Party supporters (67.7%).
By region, former Deputy Prime Minister Kim received 38.1% support in the southern area (Suwon, Yongin, Anyang, Gunpo, Osan, Anseong, Uiwang, Gwacheon), ahead of former lawmaker Yoo's 37.0%. In the southwestern area (Hwaseong, Bucheon, Ansan, Pyeongtaek, Siheung, Gwangmyeong) and eastern area (Seongnam, Namyangju, Gwangju, Hanam, Icheon, Guri, Yeoju, Yangpyeong, Gapyeong), as well as the northern area (Goyang, Gimpo, Paju, Uijeongbu, Yangju, Pocheon, Dongducheon, Yeoncheon), Yoo led with 38.6%, 37.1%, and 37.6% respectively, ahead of Kim's 37.5%, 33.9%, and 33.7%.
▶How was the survey conducted?= This survey was commissioned by Asia Economy and conducted by Realmeter from April 1 (Friday) to April 2 (Saturday). Calls were attempted to 77,535 eligible voters aged 18 and over in Gyeonggi Province, with a final 1,009 respondents completing the survey, yielding a response rate of 1.3%. The survey used an automatic response method with 90% mobile and 10% landline calls, employing a random digit dialing sampling frame. Statistical adjustments were made using rim weighting based on gender, age group, and region according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's resident registration population statistics as of the end of February 2022. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
