Seodaeseok, Mayor of Gwangju Seo-gu, Establishes Possibility of Revival
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Democratic Party of Korea has created a possibility for Seo Daeseok, Mayor of Seo-gu, Gwangju, to recover by enforcing the standard of "3 DUI offenses within 15 years" for the June 1 local election nominations.
According to the Democratic Party on the 3rd, the party's local election planning team held a meeting that day to discuss the "three-strike DUI rule" proposed by the Gwangju City Party.
The Gwangju City Party, upon confirming that there were several prospective candidates with multiple DUI records, proposed to the central party that any candidate with three DUI offenses, regardless of the time period, be deemed "unqualified without exception."
Through the meeting, the planning team decided not to accept the three-strike DUI rule but to adhere to the original standards of "3 offenses within 15 years," "2 offenses within 10 years," and offenses detected after the enforcement of the Yoon Chang-ho Act (December 18, 2018).
A planning team official stated, "We also referred to the People Power Party's standards and judged that raising issues about DUI offenses from several decades ago would be excessive."
This decision is expected to be finalized at the Central Party Emergency Response Committee meeting on the 4th.
Accordingly, the possibility of recovery has been created for Seo Daeseok, Mayor of Seo-gu, who has a record of three DUI offenses.
Seo, who is expected to run for re-election in this local election, was at risk of being judged "unqualified" as the three-strike DUI rule surfaced.
Seo's DUI offenses occurred between 1996 and 2000, so if the standards discussed by the planning team are passed, he will avoid disqualification.
Currently, Seo Daeseok is classified as a subject for re-examination by the Public Official Election Candidate Recommendation Management Committee.
