Gwangju Gwangsan-gu Mayor Preliminary Candidates Agree on Fair Primary Focused on Policy Competition

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The preliminary candidates for the Gwangsan District Mayor of the Democratic Party of Korea, who will participate in the nationwide local elections held on June 1, have agreed on a fair primary election.

According to the Democratic Party's Gwangsan District Gap and Eul Regional Committees on the 3rd, the day before, the preliminary candidates for Gwangsan District Mayor and regional chairmen Lee Yongbin and Min Hyungbae discussed the primary election rules and the method of joint debates.

The preliminary candidates who declared their candidacy for Gwangsan District Mayor?Kim Hakshil, Park Byungkyu, Yoon Nansil, Yoon Bonggeun, Lee Youngsoon, and Choi Chihyun?each expressed their campaign sentiments and positions, and after discussions, agreed to engage in a fair election based on a contest of capabilities.

The two chairmen and candidates established two principles throughout the primary election process.

They agreed to compete through a policy election presenting the vision and growth strategy of the Gwangsan area during the primary process, and to follow the decisions of the Public Official Election Commission regarding the primary method and number of candidates.

Additionally, all preliminary candidates expressed active willingness to participate in the joint debate, which will be the first among the eight regional committees in Gwangju to be held.

Chairman Lee Yongbin emphasized, “Since this local election is held immediately after the presidential election defeat, we have a shared responsibility to show the most rational and Democratic Party-like primary election to local voters,” adding, “It is not right for the process of selecting a true worker for Gwangsan District to be perceived by local residents as a competition between Gap and Eul.”

He continued, “In this primary process, fairness is the top priority, and I will do my best to ensure that it becomes a policy contest and capability verification among preliminary candidates.”

Chairman Min Hyungbae stated, “The primary should be free of negativity through sound criticism of policies,” and added, “I hope that the intra-party primary will be one of solidarity and unity, leading to a coalition government that embraces the pledges and visions of other candidates.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s Gwangsan District Mayor joint debate is scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. on the 7th on CMB Broadcasting.
