[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The number of Seoul city council members, including Kim In-ho, chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, running for district mayor positions in the June 1 local elections is increasing.
The aspirations of Seoul city council members ultimately aiming to become district mayors and then members of the National Assembly are being proven as declarations of candidacy for district mayor positions in the 8th term of the Seoul Metropolitan Government continue.
Chairman Kim In-ho will declare his candidacy for the 8th term Dongdaemun District Mayor on April 4 at 4 p.m. in front of Dongdaemun District Office.
With Chairman Kim’s declaration to run for Dongdaemun District Mayor, the Democratic Party is expected to see a competition among Yoon Jong-il, director of Dongdaemun Cultural Center, and Choi Dong-min, former Blue House administrative officer.
In Dobong District, three-term council member Kim Yong-seok (former floor leader of the Democratic Party) has declared his challenge. Councilor Kim is a six-term legislator, having served three terms as a Dobong District council member and three terms as a Seoul city council member.
In Eunpyeong District, Lee Hyun-chan, chairman of the Administrative Autonomy Committee, has declared his candidacy for Eunpyeong District Mayor, challenging the incumbent mayor Kim Mi-kyung.
In Seodaemun District, a fierce competition is expected between former council chairman Shin Won-chul and current Democratic Party floor leader Jo Sang-ho.
In Guro District, Kim In-je, a current city council member who served as chairman of the 9th City Council Urban Planning and Management Committee, has declared his candidacy for district mayor.
In Dongjak District, former vice chairman Park Ki-yeol and Yoo Yong, chairman of the Planning and Economy Committee, are preparing to run.
In Gangnam District, city council member Sung Jung-gi has declared his candidacy and begun full-scale election campaigning. In Songpa District, former city council vice chairman Kang Gam-chang declared his candidacy for Songpa District Mayor on the 28th and is competing with former Seoul City Finance Director Seo Kang-seok.
In Jongno District, city council member Ko Byung-guk, a former aide to former National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun, has declared his candidacy.
Among former city council members, former council member Lee Joo-soo has challenged for Seongdong District Mayor.
Also, former council members Shin Eon-geun and Heo Ki-hoe have declared their candidacies challenging Park Jun-hee, mayor of Gwanak District.
