Say "Consumer-Customized Commerce" Instead of "Curation Commerce"


The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 30th that the term 'curation commerce' be replaced with the Korean phrase 'consumer-tailored commerce.' They also suggested 'gajok dolbom cheongnyeon' (family care youth) and 'ballyeodongmul chinhwa' (pet-friendly) as Korean alternatives for 'young carer' and 'pet friendly,' respectively.


Curation commerce refers to e-commerce where experts in a specific field select products considering consumer preferences and sell them at discounted prices. At the New Words Meeting held on the 16th, the Ministry and the Institute reviewed the appropriateness and usability of the term and decided on 'consumer-tailored commerce' as the replacement. The selection also reflected survey results. In a national acceptance survey conducted from the 18th to the 24th with about 2,000 participants, 81.9% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate. Additionally, 79.1% agreed on the necessity of Korean alternatives.


'Young carer' refers to youths who care for family members experiencing disabilities, illnesses, or drug addiction. The alternative term decided in this discussion was 'gajok dolbom cheongnyeon' (family care youth). 'Pet friendly' encompasses services related to pets, such as travel products that accommodate pets. The appropriate Korean term selected was 'ballyeodongmul chinhwa' (pet-friendly).


The New Words Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternatives easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields including Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communication, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the proactive use of these alternatives by government ministries and media outlets.
