[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Wooseok] Kim Nam-guk, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with former party leader Song Young-gil, who has been surrounded by rumors of running for Seoul mayor, emphasizing the spirit of "putting the party before oneself" and requesting him to play a role in the June 1 local elections. Kim is classified as a close aide of Lee Jae-myung, having served as Lee’s chief of staff during the Democratic Party presidential primary.

On the 29th, Kim posted on his Facebook, "Early in the morning, together with Representative Jeong Seong-ho, I visited Eunhaesa Temple in Yeongcheon, Gyeongbuk, where former leader Song Young-gil is staying," adding, "I expressed my gratitude for his dedication and sacrifice as party leader during the last presidential election. We talked about various topics ranging from everyday matters to ways to reform our Democratic Party and become a competent party focused on people’s livelihoods, as well as the future course of President-elect Yoon Seok-youl, who will be responsible for governing South Korea."

He wrote, "Former leader Song Young-gil was most concerned about the grievances and regrets of supporters after the presidential election. He is also listening to the voices of supporters and ordinary citizens demanding reform and change in the Democratic Party after the election, and shared his own various regrets. He mentioned that he is studying real estate policies while taking a rest because he feels disappointed in that area."

He added, "We also talked about President-elect Yoon Seok-youl, who will be responsible for governing South Korea for the next five years. In particular, regarding the relocation of the presidential office, former leader Song expressed concerns that Yoon is pushing forward with the move to Yongsan without sufficient communication with the public and without being fully prepared on a practical level."

Kim said, "He also confided his worries about the upcoming local elections," adding, "It looks like it will be a very difficult election, and I told him that in such a situation, someone must put everything aside with the spirit of putting the party before oneself, sacrificing and dedicating themselves. I thought that if someone who can soothe the grievances and regrets of supporters following the presidential election results, unite everyone, and take the lead in solving livelihood issues such as real estate takes on that role, it would be a great help in the local elections." In effect, he encouraged former leader Song to run for Seoul mayor.
