[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol's camp declared that they will not engage in divisive politics like "ABM" (Anything But Moon, meaning pursuing anything except policies of the Moon Jae-in administration).
Earlier, on the 26th, at the Presidential Transition Committee workshop, President-elect Yoon stated, "We need to carefully judge why certain issues occurred in the current administration, and selectively continue the policies that should be carried forward to the next government."
On the morning of the 28th, Kim Eun-hye, spokesperson for the president-elect, said at a press conference at the Presidential Transition Committee in Tongui-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, regarding Yoon's workshop remarks, "It means we will not divide people based on ideology and camps."
She added, "In past government transitions, there was always an 'Anything But' approach, which meant unconditionally abolishing and excluding the previous administration's policies, dividing things again by ideology and camps. We will carry forward the parts that should be inherited from the previous government and reflect on and judge the parts that were wrong."
Some interpret this message from President-elect Yoon and the transition committee as a strategy to appeal to the moderate voters ahead of the June 1 local elections.
However, Yoon's camp still plans significant revisions to key policies of the Moon Jae-in administration, such as real estate regulations and the nuclear phase-out policy.
On the 25th, during a briefing on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, President-elect Yoon pointed out, "Housing policies have been repeated 28 times in the current administration, which ultimately fueled a tremendous rise in housing prices." Regarding regulations on multiple homeowners, he said, "We need to examine more carefully whether excessive regulation is appropriate."
Additionally, on the 24th, during a briefing on the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the transition committee instructed to "promptly review the resumption of construction of Shin Hanul Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4," signaling a restoration of the nuclear power ecosystem.
Meanwhile, 'ABM' is a term modeled after 'ABC (Anything But Clinton),' which was used after U.S. President George W. Bush took office in 2001 to mean pursuing anything except the policies of the previous Clinton administration.
