[Asia Economy Reporter Tae-min Ryu] The National Geographic Information Institute of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 28th that it has signed a business agreement to build the most accurate existing map, the 1:1000 electronic map, together with 33 local governments this year. On the 29th, a seminar on the advancement strategy of the 1:1000 electronic map will also be held.
The 1:1000 electronic map is an accurate map that includes all types of road information and safety facilities such as fire hydrants, containing up to nine times more information compared to the 1:5000 map, with a difference from the actual location within 70 cm. It began to be built for the safety management of underground facilities following the gas explosion accidents in Ahyeon-dong, Seoul, and the Daegu subway in the 1990s. However, currently, the nationwide construction rate of the 1:1000 electronic map is only 12% (11,327 km²), and the annual revision rate is about 7%.
Recently, its role has shifted to serve as foundational information for digital platforms that collect and share various digital information in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, such as autonomous driving, smart mobility, and drones. At this seminar, the case of Seoul City, which reduced the budget for building the 1:1000 electronic map by using administrative information systems while expanding the area and shortening the update cycle, will be shared.
The construction of the 1:1000 electronic map is a pledge of the new government. Jo Myung-hee, a member of the People Power Party who proposed this pledge, emphasized, “To realize a digital twin land required by the 4th Industrial Revolution era, the 1:1000 electronic map must be built promptly.”
Sagong Ho-sang, Director of the National Geographic Information Institute, said, “This business agreement will be an opportunity for the 1:1000 electronic map to establish itself as a core of the digital platform government,” and added, “We will continue to actively promote multifaceted exchanges and cooperation with industries and local governments.”
