[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon, PD Yoon Jin-geun] Yoon Hong-geun, Chairman of Genesis BBQ, claimed that "the price of chicken should be around 30,000 won."
On the 24th, Chairman Yoon appeared on YTN Radio's 'Wise Radio Life' and responded to the host's comment that the public feels burdened by the "20,000 won chicken price era" by stating, "The price of chicken should be 30,000 won, not 20,000 won."
The basis for Chairman Yoon's argument for raising chicken prices is the "cost." First, the market price for live chicken is 2,600 won per kilogram, but to obtain 1 kilogram of chicken meat, 1.6 kilograms of live chicken must be slaughtered. This is because parts that are difficult to consume are trimmed during the slaughtering process.
He argued that when adding the costs of slaughtering and transportation, the raw material cost increases further.
Additionally, Chairman Yoon explained that BBQ incurs extra costs for supplementary ingredients used to make chicken, such as powder costing 2,000 won per bird and olive oil up to 4,000 won.
Chairman Yoon emphasized that the price increase is not intended for Genesis BBQ headquarters to make a profit. In the same broadcast, he mentioned that franchise owners are operating at levels below minimum wage, and that the price increase would benefit the franchisees.
A Genesis BBQ official explained, "BBQ is not trying to raise chicken prices arbitrarily, but since franchise stores put in a lot of effort to make chicken, charging 30,000 won is not expensive."
