President-elect Yoon's Governance Expectation at 55%... "Lower than Predecessors Moon 87%, Park 78%, Lee 85%"

53% Support Keeping Office at Cheong Wa Dae, 36% Favor Moving to Yongsan

[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The public's expectation for President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol's governance was lower than that of past presidents. Additionally, the majority opinion favored maintaining the current Blue House office rather than relocating it.


According to a public opinion poll released on the 25th by Gallup, 55% of respondents believed that President-elect Yoon would govern well over the next five years, while 40% thought he would perform poorly. Supporters of the People Power Party (90%), conservatives (80%), and residents of Daegu and Gyeongbuk (75%) showed high expectations for Yoon's governance. Conversely, supporters of the Democratic Party of Korea (72%), progressives (73%), and people in their 40s (59%) predominantly expected poor performance.

Gallup explained that the expectation for President-elect Yoon's governance is lower compared to previous presidents. In polls conducted within two weeks of their election, past presidents' governance expectations exceeded 80%. Former President Lee Myung-bak had 84%, former President Park Geun-hye had 78%, and former President Moon Jae-in had 87%.


Public opinion on relocating the presidential office was also largely negative. While 53% favored maintaining the current Blue House, only 36% supported moving to Yongsan.


Regarding the pardon of former President Lee Myung-bak, 39% supported the pardon, whereas 50% opposed it.


Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his governance slightly increased compared to last week. The public opinion that he is performing well was 44%, while 51% thought he was performing poorly. Positive evaluations rose by 2 percentage points, and negative evaluations fell by 1 percentage point from the previous week.


This poll was conducted via telephone interviews with 1,000 adults aged 18 and over nationwide from the 22nd to the 24th. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
