[Asia Economy Reporter Na Yeeun] South Korea has recorded the highest number of new COVID-19 cases for three consecutive weeks.


According to the World Health Organization (WHO) weekly epidemiological report on the 23rd (local time), the number of new COVID-19 cases worldwide from the 14th to the 20th was 12,384,300, an increase of 7% compared to the previous week.


This upward trend was led by the Western Pacific region, which includes South Korea. Among the six regions, the Western Pacific was the only one to see an increase in new cases, rising by 21% compared to the previous week.


The other regions saw decreases: Eastern Mediterranean (-41%), Africa (-33%), Southeast Asia (-23%), Americas (-17%), while Europe (0%) showed no change from the previous week.


In particular, South Korea reported 2,817,214 new cases during this period, the highest number among all countries worldwide.


Accordingly, South Korea has reported the highest weekly new cases for three consecutive weeks: 1,461,431 cases from February 28 to March 6, 2,100,171 cases from March 7 to 13, and continuing through last week.


Following South Korea, Vietnam (1,888,694 cases), Germany (1,538,666 cases), France (582,344 cases), and Australia (513,388 cases) reported the next highest numbers of new cases.


Meanwhile, as of the 23rd, the cumulative number of confirmed cases worldwide stands at 474,102,276, with total deaths reaching 6,098,716.
