Coupang Changes 'Wow Membership' Fee for Existing Members to 4,990 KRW Starting June

Effective from the first payment date after June 10th

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Coupang has decided to change the usage fee for existing 'Wow Membership' members from 2,900 KRW to 4,990 KRW per month starting in June. This follows the change in the Wow Membership fee to 4,990 KRW for new members at the end of December last year, and now the same fee will be applied to existing members as well.

According to industry sources on the 23rd, Coupang has begun the consent process to change the monthly Wow Membership fee for existing members from the previous 2,900 KRW to 4,990 KRW within the first half of this year. Previously, at the end of December last year, Coupang announced that the Wow Membership fee for new customers would be changed to 4,990 KRW, and that existing members would be notified later. This is the first time Coupang has changed the Wow Membership monthly fee since its introduction in 2019.

On the same day, Coupang notified some customers of the fee change consent notice via app and email. The notice stated, "Since starting Wow Membership in 2019, we have invested trillions of KRW in free shipping and free returns, with over 1 billion free shipping deliveries," and added, "We have added 10 benefits including Rocket Direct Purchase free shipping, Rocket Fresh dawn delivery, and Coupang Play, striving to improve customer satisfaction, and therefore are changing the membership monthly fee to 4,990 KRW." This notice will be sent sequentially to all members going forward.

Members who agree to the fee change will have the new amount applied on the first payment date after June 10. For example, even if a consumer who receives the notice this month agrees to the price change, they will continue to use the service at the previous fee of 2,900 KRW until the first payment date after June 10, when the price will change to 4,990 KRW. Members who do not agree to the price change will continue to use Wow Membership normally but will be automatically canceled on the first payment date after June 10.
